chocolate brown eyes shone with sincerity. “You were hurt before, and I don"t want

Caden fought back a shudder, because—guess what?— he didn"t want

anything like that to happen to him again either. Saying the whole thing sucked ass

was a major understatement. “What does the one have to do with the other? What

happened had nothing to do with my sexuality.” Caden snorted at the thought. “I

didn"t have any sexuality! I hadn"t been with anyone for at least a year at that

point.” Please don’t ask. He wasn"t ready, not yet.

For a moment he was afraid Jesse would push it. He could see the man

working to suppress the need for answers. When he nodded, Caden let out a breath.

He took Jesse"s hand and led him into the room behind the kitchen. His office was

compact and unusually neat. Caden hadn"t been able to concentrate on his work

since he"d been hurt. If he had been capable of working, the large wooden desk

would have been covered in papers and notepads, books and pens scattered across

its now-gleaming surface.

Instead, everything was tidy. That in itself made Caden feel like a failure.

Jesse"s hand rested on the small of his back. The comfort of the gentle touch chased

away the voice in his head that said he was weak and damaged. Caden pointed to a

bookshelf at the other end of the room, studying Jesse"s face for any indication he

already knew who he was.

“There, on that shelf, is Alexander Wyatt.” Jesse looked at the thirteen books

that lined the bookshelf, hardbacks and paperbacks of each title. “And here”—

Caden tapped his chest, drawing Jesse"s gaze back to him—“here"s Alexander

Wyatt.”
